Sex and the City Movie Review

With much fanfare preceding its release, Sex and the City, the movie has finally hit theaters. Women, and some fashion loving men, lined the streets to see the final chapters of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha. But did the movie live up to the hype? Would the fashion, the 6th lady (New York being the 5th lady) outshine the story line? Could the 30 minute television show still retain its zsa zsa zsu on the big screen?

It has been 4 years since the last episode aired on HBO and the film starts off re-introducing the cast

Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker now 40 years old, is still writing and dating John James Preston, played by Chris Noth, previously known as Big. Charlotte York Goldenblatt, played by Kristen Davis is still happily married to her divorce lawyer husband Harry Goldenblatt, played by Evan Handler. We are introduced to their now 4 year old adopted daughter Lily. Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon is still married and living in Brooklyn with Steve Brady and their son Brady. Samantha Jones, played by Kim Catrall has moved to California to manage Smith Jared, her much younger boyfriend’s, career.

Despite the very perfect picture being put forth in the beginning, there are many layered issues. Carrie and Big live together and decide to get married. It’s Carrie’s first marriage and Big’s 3rd. Steve reveals to Miranda that he has cheated on her. Samantha is not so comfortable being in a relationship. Charlotte’s character is the only one that doesn’t have any surface issues.

There is so much to like about this movie. The fashion, the 6th lady, does not disappoint. Carrie is still a card carrying shoe junkie. She also pushes the fashion envelope once again with her over sized flower dresses and Chanel purses. Watching the ladies strut around New York City in these bedazzled, eye catching outfits makes this film cinema candy for the fashion addicted fans who loved the show. The introduction of Carrie’s assistant, Louise, played by Jennifer Hudson, is a nice addition to cast that has had almost no new additions. Unfortunately, the trademark witty banter is lacking from the movie. There are a lot of tear jerker moments that may be foreign to the Sex and the City fans. Even with its very few shortcomings, this film neatly wraps up the lives of these very fabulous women with plot twists and turns that keep the viewers’ interest with breath abated.
